Soul Seed, a social awareness project

video production

april - may 2022

Soul Seed project consists of two parts, video production and performative writing. Performative writing functions as a complementary addition to the video. The project functions as a critique to screen dictated lifestyle of modern days, technology and material centered way of living. It advocates that materialistic and technology addicted lifestyles lack the essence, the ‘soul’,  and this type of living prevents people from appreciating the essential values which make life possible, such as air, sun, water, soil etc. In the video, this problem is represented in the first part, as a state of being unconscious, under constant stimuli from screens, always distracted.

The question “what is ‘nature’?” is not easy to reply to but in the video production, the lacking ‘soul’ of the materialistic life is associated with the ‘seeds’ which exist everywhere, in fruits and vegetables we eat, or in the trees around us. The seeds hold life itself as they are capable of starting new lives, the lives of their own generation and others, as they feed humans and other creatures. It is both so ordinary and extraordinary as we are so used to their existence and we never pay attention to their superpowers.

The second part of the video shows a moment of realization where the main character pays attention to the seeds around herself and gets a glimpse of awareness. In the last part of the video, the protagonist wants to find the other seeds around herself and have a journey to the source, the forest, to nature, to the place which nurtures her and other humans. It displays a process of transition and a suggestion to escape. A critique on the dichotomy of nature/culture, and rituals for reconnecting and care-taking for both humans themselves and towards nature. It represents a journey to escape from the norm-dictated world, with questioning, a beginning of a slow healing process. The project does not suggest a quick fix but a place to start.
